Patching together a few hours at Patch Coffee.

A day of errands also deserves a little treat and I just happened to be a few minutes from a favorite natural spot of mine up in the Trabuco hills. On my way out, a desperation for hydration called. I thought I would stop at Starbucks for some water, but then found myself face-to-face with Patch Coffee. A coincidence or fate? I had just read about Patch Coffee that morning in Orange Coast Magazine. A sign!! At least that was my excuse for this unexpected coffee trip.

Walking in I was surprised how large the space was. Almost industrial, this place features visible ceiling structures, an exposed brick wall, and dangling metal lights. Yet, the atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and dynamic. Looking to fit in a large crowd of friends or do some work on your own? Patch offers a variety of seating. The shop features two large picnic tables, bar seats, a nook with couches and regular individual tables.

The decor is a mix of industrial park, hipster chic (records, brick, bookshelves), and motivational. The wall to the right as you walk in features two elongated arms, which point to "Be..." Below sits a bucket with wooden signs that customers can hang up.

Patch's prices match the variety of other shops in Orange County, nothing too extreme, but never a cheap drink. Besides the usual faire Patch also offers kombucha on tap, coconut water, a ninja matcha, and a protein latte.

(They do serve a limited menu of items).

On a scalding 90 degree day the only obvious choice was a cold brew, which they steep for 24hrs (my preferred method of brewing). The finished product is a lovely sweet and smooth Peruvian coffee that I couldn't refrain from finishing before I even hit the hills.

The staff was more than friendly. In my pursuit of some conversation on my lonely day of errands, I chatted with the two baristas who remembered me when I returned the next day for a bit more of that cold brew. The warm smile and acknowledgement that they remembered me sold me on this place as one of my favorite new spots. Not only do they have a variety of great seating and reading for those quiet afternoons, but their coffee is well made and well researched. Currently their coffee offerings are a majority blends, but they will soon be adding some single origins to their coffee menu. I will definitely be stopping by to check out their latest goods.

Overall Score: 10

Pros: Great service, good coffee, strong offering of non-coffee drinks, and a wonderful diverse atmosphere.

Cons: Only complaint is that it is a bit of a distance from the freeway.
