Coffee of the Month

Traveling down south for my coffee pick of the month I braved my first Honduran coffee. Yes, I said braved as I have a palette that typically is excited by the bright notes of a Papua New Guinea or the chocolatey sweetness of an Ethiopian. The closest I have come to a Honduran coffee in flavor is a Colombian, which typically makes my nose scrunch up and my tongue roll back into my throat with its earthy caramel notes.

Following birthday celebrations and family events, my tiny sweet tooth has been over-satiated. I decided to take a leap of faith and follow the suggestion of a James Coffee Co barista choosing a Honduran for my pour-over. It was just what I needed on this strangely overcast day.

Flavor Profile:

Honduran coffees lack the rich sweetness of an Ethiopian, but can range from a bright, acidic flavor much like a Guatemalan. Hondurans often have a strong brown sugar sweetness that compliments the caramel notes making Honduran beans a popular choice for espresso blends.

My Honduran pour over had a light acidity and an earthy caramel flavor.

The Country:

The dark rich soil of the Honduran rainforest is filled with natural elements from the vegetation growing around coffee beans. The nutrient rich soil, makes it is easier for Honduran farmers to grow organic coffee beans. This makes Honduran coffee a popular choice for companies that wish to serve an organic coffee.

The overall rise of coffee production and the increasing trade throughout the world has arguably saved Honduras from bankruptcy following the 2009 political crisis. The increasing trade has generated employment and access to hard currency, which has kept Honduras afloat during this rough time.

Since 2011, Honduras has surpassed Guatemala as the largest Central American coffee producer and exporter. Honduras is currently the seventh largest producer of coffee. It is slowly gaining recognition for its quality and beginning to hit the shelves of specialty coffee shops, such as James Coffee Co.
