Steelhead Coffee, Long Beach.

Provocatively strong headed, this coffee shop is making my list of top ten. Located conveniently off the 5 Freeway I decided to make a stop on my way up to Los Angeles to visit my friend in the hospital. Cranking after a twisted morning that led me to take the trip to Los Angeles, I needed the blessing of a good cup of caffeine. Steelhead Coffee came to my rescue with their ironically named Phantom Limb Cold Brew (my friend had his leg amputated, thanks to a drunk driver).

Huckleberry Roasters Phantom Limb is a dark, rich fruity blend of two Ethiopian Sidamas. The current tasting notes: raspberry and blackberry, lemony brightness, floral aromatics, and subtle cocoa.

These Colorado roasters use this haunting coffee to support those, such as my friend whom experience phantom limb syndrome. They donate part of their proceeds from the sale of this roast to local amputee organizations.

Huckleberry Roasters are not the only roasters featured at Steelhead. They also offers beans from their local roasters Rose Park in Long Beach. (Review will be coming shortly)

Following the trend in coffee shop atmospheres, Steelhead is white washed with a dotted map of the world on its main wall. Wood and steel tables and chairs provide seating and work space for visitors. Large storefront windows give off ample light.

While, it was past lunch we were able to view their menu which offered a nice spread of organic, healthy breakfast and lunch options.

The most pleasant surprise was this bit of artwork in the back of their shop. A Dali-esque mural of coffee and coffee slogans, that reenergized the art historian in me.
